Diethylpropion is what is known as a sympathomimetic amine, which is not unlike an amphetamine. This type of drug is also often referred to as an anorectic or anorexigenic drug due to its ability to decrease appetite. Tenuate stimulates the central nervous system (brain and nerves) to increase blood pressure and heart rate. However, it is not entirely known how this medication works to help a person lose weight.
