There are certain habits that people have in common when they have successfully kept up with a healthful weight loss strategy and have not only achieved their goal weight but have managed to keep it off. It is those habits that should be a primary focus for anyone who is trying to lose weight, as they are the ones that have been proven and that have shown that they can stop the problem from returning.
Consider adopting the following habits for your own effort to lose weight in order to improve your chances of long term success:
• Be social about it – get your friends and family behind you as much as possible. If you know people who are also trying to lose weight, buddy up with them to exercise more regularly together and to keep each other on track in terms of eating right. Help each other to know when it’s time to eat that special dessert, and when it would be best to take one bite and put the rest back in the fridge. The more you make this a part of your life with the people around you, the more natural it will feel and the more prepared you will be to keep it up.
• Track your food – this is particularly important when you first start dieting and it should be carried on for some time until you feel exceptionally confident that you understand your food, its calorie content and its nutrition. If you don’t think that you can keep it up for a very long time, then set a goal to track all of your foods for seven days. Once that’s done, try for another seven. You’ll be surprised at how much you learn, how much better armed you are to make appropriate eating choices, and how much more likely you are to choose not to eat what you know you shouldn’t have, as you will have to face entering it into the food diary later on.
• Hold yourself accountable – stop making excuses. Understand your habits and your choices and know that you’re the only one who can make them. Set goals, track your behaviors and note your strengths and weaknesses. Play to those strengths and improve the weaknesses. Get the most out of your strong areas while you work to reduce the negative impact of the weaker areas. This will help you to continually improve your ability to successfully lose weight and it will make it easier over time.
